QUESTION: I started feeding birds at our house and now we have blue jays scaring off the rest of the birds and waking us at 4 am skwaking and making our life miserable. How do we get rid of blue jays but keep feeding the rest of our wonderful birds?
Laura
Spearfish, SD USA - Tuesday, July 1, 2008
ANSWER: Laura, When you start feeding birds you attract ALL birds. Blue Jays can be a problem, but they usually dont stick around too long and eventually head out to other areas to feed. Stop feeding for awhile then go back to safflower seed only for about two weeks. Then put out your good seed. Since you have this problem you might want to consider a blend of anything that does not contain peanuts. THEY LOVE PEANUTS
.Good Luck

QUESTION: I've been trying to attrack Blue Jay birds to our backyard. I've bought bird feed peanuts,as well as putting out sunflower seeds from the Wild Bird store... and so far all we see are the big black birds. (We do get Cardinals,finches...but still now Blue Jays.) I've lived in this area all my life and I know the Blue Jays are around, but have seen less of them Can you advise what else I might use to bring these birds to our feeders?
Jim
Cincinnati, OH USA - June 14, 2008
ANSWER: Jim, You seem to be doing all the right things. They also love peanuts in the shell. Contact your local Audubon Society and see if they know anything. I am aware that Blue Jays and others birds move out to different feeding areas at times and then return. Shirley
QUESTION: what is the difference between a volture and a buzzard
Rosa Garrison
Hollywood, fl - Monday, June 9, 2008
ANSWER: Dear Rosa, A "Buzzard" is any hawk from the Family- Falconidae- Genus BUTEO...Red-tails, Red-shouldereds, Broad-wings, etc... Americans are the only people in the world that continue to confuse that particular vernacular. Must be all of those retarded cartoons we saw as children. And about 10 years ago, thanks to studying their DNA, the (New World, at least) Vultures have been found to be more closely linked genetically to the Family Threskiornithidae...(the ibis' and the spoonbills). Fish&Wildlife moves along at glacial speed and hasn't updated the list yet to reflect the change. Vultures eat dead things but will occasionally descend on newborn calves and have also been known to attack the cow when she is lying down to give birth. Just keep moving and you'll be ok!

QUESTION: I have several nesting boxes occupied this year by screech owls. Questions--do they mate more than once a year? Do they mate through May? When they are found on the ground should they be placed in the trees as there are cats about. Any other info will be appreciated. Thanks.
carroll pooler - Wednesday, May 14, 2008
ANSWER: Carroll, Very seldom do they mate twice per year. But as I always say, there is no guarantee in nature. The babies usually leave by June 15th. Ive seen the babies popping up in the hole during the last half of May, and then sometime in June the parents hold off feeding to entice them out. They flutter to the ground then look for the nearest tree to climb. So when you find one on the ground be aware that the parents are usually nearby. If they dont climb on their own, place them on a limb away from cats. Good luck

QUESTION: We used to have pigeons, gray squirrels and other species of wildlife around our Neighborhood. For the last several years, all we seem to have are about 100 Turkey Vulchers. Could they be eating the pigeon eggs and baby squirrels?
Robert Pawluk
Little Falls, New York U. S. - Monday, May 12, 2008
ANSWER: Dear Robert, Vultures eat dead things for the most part, although they have been known to occasionally kill calves and peck at the udders of birthing cows. There may be something environmental going on in your area that is keeping the 'regular' wildlife away. You might want to contact your regional US Fish & Wildlife Service and Department of Natural Resources (State Game & Fish or equivalent) to see if there have been any large kills reported. The absence of wildlife (esp birds) alerts one that something is amiss in the environment....m.

QUESTION: Tonight for the first time, my Eastern Bluebirds have not come out to meet me. I give them mealworms when I come home from work and the male is always perched on the wren house waiting for them. I checked the Bluebird house about 80 feet from the wren house and the house looks abandoned. There were babies I am sure because I would see both male and female pick up the mealworms and go inside the house and I could hear them chirping for food. I never looked inside though because I thought it might scare them. I have just started (about 9 months now) bird watching and trying to get songbirds into my backyard. Could you tell me if the parents leave once the babies fly away? I am now seaching the internet to find out information. I am concerned because I looked forward to seeing these Eastern Bluebirds daily and feeding them. Thank you for your help.
Sheri Corbin
Greenville, SC USA - Thursday, May 8, 2008
ANSWER: Sheri, Sometimes bluebirds decide on another nesting area. And by the way, males sometimes take care of more nests than one. I would turn the entrance to the bluebird house just a 1/4 of a turn to a different view. Maybe a different view will bring them back or a new pair. Be sure to take out the old nest each time. They wont reuse the old one and when they build a new one it doesnt leave much room for the new brood. Good luck

Donna
Hudson, NY USA - Tuesday, May 6, 2008
ANSWER: Donna, the bird sees its reflection in the glass and thinks that another bird is invading its territory. Take a suction cup with a hook and attach several strands of colored ribbons to it so that they blow in the breeze. This will break the reflection. They usually stop this after they finish nesting. Mary Bradley

QUESTION: Neighbors 2 miles from me have 2 dead trees where hundreds (no exaggeration) of Vulchers congregate daily.
I have lived in this community for a couple years now and I get the willies every day as I pass this house. One day a woman was outside taking pops at the Vulchers with a Rifle. What would motivate a mass of Vulchers to continue to congregate at this location even when being shot at. They flew in a frenzy but many continued to purch even while being shot at. I've seen childrens items in the yard and I couldn't imagine living there. The trees where they purch are extremely close to the house.
Margie Oxford
Armuchee, GA usa - Wednesday, March 12, 2008
ANSWER: Hi Margie, You might want to pass along to your neighbor that it is a FEDERAL OFFENSE to "pop" a protected species. Vultures roost in numbers and there is apparently enough carrion to keep them alive, otherwise they would move on down the line. They won't hurt you unless you pass away in the yard, then they will most readily dispose of your corpse. :-) One option? I would consider this as throwing the baby out with the bath water because dead trees are important to a healthy ecosystem; cut the trees down so their roost site goes away. There wouldn't be hefty fines and possible jail time for that....m.

QUESTION: I live in a residential neighborhood that has had several great horned owl attacks on small dogs in their backyards in the last several months. Is there anyway to deter an owl from my own backyard?
aj woodson
albuquerque, nm us - Friday, February 15, 2008
ANSWER: Dear AJ, Small mammals are part of the Great Horned owl diet. They can't tell the difference between a Yorkie and a groundhog; (me, I'd rather have a groundhog :-) if it's moving and small enough to pick up, they consider it lunch. It's like I tell people who free-range chickens and expect nothing bad to happen; if you want your little critters to live a nice long life, you need to make sure they are protected when they are outside. Low cost runs can be installed for the safety of your pet, as long as you have a roof on it, otherwise it would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Another option? Don't let your dog outside at night without supervision....m.

QUESTION: I am renting a house across the street to Anclote River and up against untouched woods. I have planted butter fly plants through out the yard. My yard is a concert of song in the mornings. I am in Tarpon Springs, Florida what birds do I have so I can buy the right food. I do also want a bat house but they are over $80 built, Is there another solution to bring bats? Thank You,
Lisa Tranchetti - Sunday, February 03, 2008
ANSWER: Lisa, you should have all kinds of birds in your area. Cardinals, blue jays, woodpeckers, etc. Feed a good blend of seed. Sunflower seeds hulled and in the shells, peanuts, and millet would be a good blend. You should have bats that have their natural habitat in the woods. Bats are very hard to attract, but the most important thing about putting up a box is to put it around 16 feet from the ground facing an open area so that when they drop out of the box they have enough room to swoop out in front of them. They usually drop down then fly out. Make sure that the box gets sun during the day so that the box stays warm at night. Good luck

QUESTION: For 19 years I watched the Cardinals out my backdoor. This past summer our neighbors cut down the spruce trees that were the homes for these Cardinals for years. I missed them especially during the winter. So beautiful. I put out a feeder with safflower and sunflower seeds. No luck. The feeder has been outside for about a week. Do you think they will come back?
Diane
Livonia, Michigan USA - Friday, January 4, 2008
ANSWER: Diane, sometimes birds have to discover all over again a source for food that we put out. I would make sure that the feeder was close to the house for protection and try some sunflower meats. Your feeder should have a tray or platform for the Cardinals to stand on rather than perches. Perches on some feeders are too short for Cardinals. Then give them some time. Eventually they will find your offerings. Good luck

QUESTION: How do you introduce an ordinance that help would protect our young children from witnessing strung up dead deers, rotting and bleeding in the front yard of neighbor who refuses to hang his dead corpses in his very ample backyard. The children's innocent eyes are subjected to this daily and it is very upsetting for them. It is a health issue, it lowers our property values and the town will nothing to help. The neighbor hangs the dead deers sometimes for 2 weeks and they rot-he does eat the meat. He takes some perverse pride in scaring all the kids on the way to school. Someone who may read this PLEASE HELP with any suggestions on how we can come to compromise for the well being of our kids in our small Massachusetts town. HELP Thanks
sandi mcculloch
Sunderland, MA United States - Friday, November 30, 2007
ANSWER: Hi Sandi, I don't really know of anything to say that might be of help. While it might be incredibly tasteless to dress them out in his front yard just for the shock factor of it all, hunting deer in season is a legal activity and I don't think there are any regulations as to where on the property the dressing out must be performed. He could actually turn this into a learning experience for the children. I recall a decade ago I was dating a man with young children and I had to gut some squirrels to feed my hawks and owls that evening while they were visiting, I took it as an opportunity to teach them some basic small mammal anatomy (they were fascinated to see the inside of a critter) and I also taught them to have respect for the animal that was sacrificed so that my birds could live. I would imagine that those children that pass by are not vegetarians and they should understand that this is the way harvesting meat used to be done, instead of assuming that meat comes nice and clean on white Styrofoam covered with clear plastic. Or, have the kids walk on the opposite side of the street....m.

Jim
Englewood, Fl. U.S. - Saturday, November 24, 2007
ANSWER: Dear Jim, You're lucky you haven't been puked on yet... You're nobody until you've been barfed on by a vulture... Both times it happened to me, I had to throw my clothes away. Projectile regurgitation is their only means of defense and by golly, it works like a charm on animals who have a developed sense of smell! I used to have a Black Vulture aptly named "Stinky Butt" and he had a GREAT personality, but I had to find a home for him because my ed. program is mobile and poor SB would get car sick. Ugh...
They don't really need a close food source to congregate. You might try motion activated sprinklers, hanging shiny objects and if you don't have any restrictions, you might try some firecrackers, but you might want to explain to your neighbors what your goal is before you start celebrating the 4th of July during the Christmas season....
The other thing you might try is calling your local Department of Agriculture and they might be able to provide some assistance after non-lethal methods have been employed. Check out this link to the Turkey Vulture society...yes, there really is one... There is an organization for everything nowadays. http://vulturesociety.homestead.com/Discourage.html ....m.

QUESTION: How do you deter or get rid of a flock of turkey vulchers? They are picking at the cattle's utters and killed a new born calf.
Patrick Hawryluk
Lebanon, PA USA - Tuesday, October 23, 2007
ANSWER: Hello Patrick, Vultures picking at the cow's udders? Is this a trick question? Cattle egrets might be participating in this activity, but it is part and parcel of the commensal symbiosis of the two species. The egret gets to dine on tasty ticks and other ectoparasites and the cow benefits because s/he is being debuggified. Turkey Vultures do not have the capacity to kill anything, unless they have figured out a way to pull the trigger on the shotgun you keep by the back door. :-) Vultures eat already dead things, preferrably several days old, nice and bloated to make for easy entry, or either scattered, smothered and covered across the highway. (Pardon the old Waffle House joke reference. I don't know if PA has this well known Southern diner). If you live near wetlands, then your property might house roosting vultures, otherwise the only reason they would LIVE around you would be that you are providing them with an already deceased food source. I would look to coyotes as the possible culprit.

SEASONAL ADVICE: Now is the time to install a Screech Owl nesting box. Go to any nature store to purchase one or go to the Article for the measurements on my website. Place it at least 16 feet from the ground. Face the hole towards a patch of woods. Mine faces an empty lot that has not been built on and is wooded. Keep the box near your house so that you can watch everything. Check out the Article on Screech Owls. Screech Owls will help remove some of the critters you dont want around your house year round. They are very precious little creatures....Shirley

QUESTION: How do I attract owls to my 40-acre farm in Maine? Owls of any kind. And do they co-exist?
Mary Gallant
Brooklin, Me USA - Sunday, September 30, 2007
ANSWER: Dear Mary, Heck, I have FIVE. I could just move in with you and then you'll have instant owls! Seriously, tho...I cannot imagine there aren't owls somewhere among that 40 acres. The only thing you can do is make sure that there remains a stable prey base and how you do that is to keep it as natural as possible. Hedgerows, brushpiles, feed the songbirds which will also attract squirrels and other small mammals upon which the owls will feed. You can put up Barred owl nest boxes if you have water on the property because they prey on aquatic vertebrates. You can install Screech owl nest boxes and plant a Moon Garden. The blossoms will open at night, attracting moths and other small flying critters for the Screechies. The Great Horneds??? They will just glide in and eat everyone else! In a nutshell, it's habitat, habitat, habitat.
The crows/bluejays/mockingbirds are the sentinel's of the forest and if you hear them fussing, they are trying to tell the other forest inhabitants that trouble is afoot in the form of some sort of predator...
Nest box plans:
Barns and Barreds http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/owl_box.php
Screech owls http://www.shawcreekbirdsupply.com/plans_screech_owl.htm
Use rough hewn pine if possible...it's thick and provides better insulation. DON'T USE STINKY CEDAR!!! The placatic acid content in cedar is very bad for the lungs of our feathered friends. Go ahead with the construction now because they will roost in them during the day throughout the year, even if they aren't nesting. The boxes provide great cover when the leaves are off the trees, which will be happening very soon in your neck of the woods. Placement...as high as you can get them without having to rent a cherry picker because you will need to clean them out a couple times a yeat. Owls don't build nests so you will need to add a short layer of shaving/chips (again, no cedar) so the eggs don't roll around. Have the hole facing East to Southeast. They like the same things we do as far as sunshine in the morning and protecting from the westerly/northerly weather....m.

QUESTION: How do I keep Bees away from my Hummingbird feeders. Hummers will not feed if the feeders have Bees feeding on the nector. Thanks
Michael Jochim
Mesa, AZ USA - Monday, September 17, 2007
ANSWER: Michael, yellow jackets, bees, wasps, they all are big problems for hummingbird feeders. There is a product out there called a wasp or bee trap. It is usually made out of glass and shaped like a pear. It has a hole in the bottom with a reservoir for sugar water. The top has a cork so that you can clean it out. Hang it near the feeder. Insects can get in for the nectar, but then cannot get out. You can find them at Smith & Hawkins, catalogs and nature stores. Others have used Vicks on a Q-tip around the bottom part of the openings. Do not put it on the top where it could end up in the nectar. Bees dont like the smell and Hummers cant smell it. Good luck Shirley
QUESTION: when do finches and hummingbirds fly away for winter?
janice
indpls, indiana usa - Saturday, September 15, 2007
ANSWER: Janice, you are fortunate to live in the city that is the home office of the Wild Birds Unlimited franchise. Contact your local store and they will tell you when your birds leave the area. I know that here in Georgia the goldfinches have started arriving so maybe yours have started leaving. The hummers are usually gone from Georgia by November 15th. That is the Ruby-throated hummingbirds. Good Luck, Shirley

judy parker
poplar bluff, missouri usa - Saturday, September 15, 2007
ANSWER: Judy, you can take down your feeders as soon as you dont see any more hummers. The Ruby-throated hummingbirds usually have all headed south by November 15th. The Southeastern part of the country has recorded 13 different species of hummers in the winter months. If you want to see if you are having any, leave one feeder up. If you see any activity contact your local Audubon Society to report your sighting. All birds have an built-in system that tells them when to leave for Mexico and South America so dont worry about leaving them up too long. Good luck

Bill Lea
Plover, Wi USA - Saturday, September 01, 2007
ANSWER: Bill, Ive been reading a book by the name of Ruby-throated Hummingbird part of the Wild Bird Guides by Robert Sargent. He is the guru when it comes to hummers. Migration really begins in July and usually ends in October. According to Bob different hummers are passing through all of our yards everyday and the last ones to leave are the young ones born in July, August, and September. So he does not saying anything about the males leaving first. Its very hard to tell except the male will be darker around the neck where the female will have a pale white throat. Good luck

QUESTION: i feed birds, squirrels, chipmunks,. I am having trouble with hawks having a field day in my yard. what can i do to scare them away. i have a dog.
sharon parotte
germantown, tennessee usa - Sunday, August 26, 2007
ANSWER: Dear Sharon, It's all part of the food chain and there isn't much to be done about it. Feeding sanctuaries are unnatural habitats. You remember how you feel when you go to cafeteria style buffet restaurant? That is how the predator feels at your house. If you stop feeding the "food", the predators will go away. You can't have it both ways. The reference to the dog confuses me a bit...yes, the dog might scare away the hawk, but it will also scare the birds and squirrels...m.

Don E. Robinson
Ashland, ALA. U S A - Saturday, August 18, 2007
ANSWER: Don
ants are a big problem with hummingbird feeders. Check with your local nature store for a product sometimes called Ant Trap. You fill it with water and attach it to the top of your feeder. Ants usually wont cross the water to get to your feeder. I have mine also on a pole where I spray the pole with an ant spray. The trick to the Ant Trap is to make sure you keep it full of water. Put the tray back on, fill the feeder, turn on the switch and watch the fun. Good Luck

QUESTION: who do tawny owls teach thire young ones
tom wood
wrawby, great britan - Monday, July 02, 2007
ANSWER: Hi Tom, FINALLY, a question about something other a stinkin' vulture... :-) I am interpreting this question to mean "How do Tawny owls teach their young ones?" After bringing prey items to the nest to feed their newly hatched owlets, after a few weeks the parents then use food to urge their (by now very hungry babes) to leave the nest when they know the babes are ready to fly. You know children...left to their own devices, they would stay in the nest forever living off the spoils of their parents and not feeling the least bit grateful, I might add! Once the babes leave the nest, they fly around with their parents learning the tricks of the trade and eventually, the young will migrate away to form their own territory the following year, if they make it through the winter. Mortality rate for birds of prey in their first year is about 80% so the goal is to get good at catching food before you starve to death. Their first winter is the hardest because they need more calories to keep the body systems going and breeding of prey items are down in the winter. It is truly the survival of the fittest.

Tyler Haskins
Berwick, Maine United States - Monday, June 18, 2007
ANSWER: Dear Tyler, Find a qualified rehabilitator as fast as your can! As babes, these birds require their dead food to be PRE-DIGESTED, otherwise they will die very soon because they can't assimilate the needed nutrients. This means that not only do they not eat Greek Salads or Cheerio's, they need a solid protein diet and one that has been laced with a pre-digestive enzyme that you would feed a dog with a pancreatic issue. You can find this supplement at your local vet's office. Their parents regurgitate old dead stuff into their crops. Can you simulate this? I don't think so. Get your butt in gear and find th ese babes some help. Post haste! Keep in mind that if you hand feed them, you will screw them up forever to be released back into the wild because they will relate to humans rather than to their own species. Get them to someone that knows how to handle them properly as in puppet/ghost feeding. An imprinted Vulture or other predator bird is doomed.

QUESTION: how can i keep squirrels away from my bird feeders CHIPPies also as soon as i put seed out for the birds the squirrels are there. you can guess what happens.
john mertens
st.benedict, pa usa - Monday, June 04, 2007
ANSWER: John, there are a variety of ways to discourage squirrels and chipmunks. It has to do with how and where you put your feeders. The ideal setup is a feeder on a pole with a baffle on the pole so they cant climb up and put it in your yard at least 20 feet from any tree limbs. There is a good selection of squirrel proof feeders. Check with your local nature store. My feeder is on an iron arm off of my deck. The feeder is a Wild Bill feeder which is battery operated. The squirrel gets a static shock just like we do when we touch a metal object during low humidity situations. It doesnt harm the squirrel, it just changes their behavior. The Mandarin feeder is another good one made by the Arundale Company. Talk to the people at one of your nature stores. They have the knowledge to help you set up your feeding stations. Good luck Shirley

QUESTION: I have a pair of eastern screech owls in a nesting box in my back yard. Today my cat chased something in my bushes. It turned out to be another screech owl. It would not fly away. So I put the cat in the house. Later this evening I saw what I believed to be both screech owls. Then a third owl not quite as big dropped down on my deck unable to fly. Could this be their baby? If so is he going to be on the ground in my bushes for awhile? What precautions should I be taking? I had this happen with a Robin last year and the parents watched from a distance while the small bird stayed in my ivy. Will this small screech owl if he cannot fly become prey?? P.S. thanks for answering my first question awhile back about the screech owls and my songbirds living together. I have to tell you I have seen less goldfinches at the feeder lately.
Janet Burke
New Lenox, Illinois USA - Wednesday, May 23, 2007
ANSWER: Janet, Ive been on vacation. Sorry that I am late in answering these questions. Usually baby screech owls climb to the nearest tree and stay perched up high for sometime before leaving their parents. I have also seen screech owls sit on the ground and not move when I have come near. You need to check out the feathering. If it still has down feathers it is a young one that may be in trouble. I would keep your kitty cat indoors for awhile and hope that the screech owls leaves soon. Good luck

You could try installing a Great Horned owl decoy, or you could turn the water hose on him when he shows up. Just don't get too close, though, because they will projectile vomit on you if frightened! And let me tell you, you just haven't lived until you have experienced vulture vomit. These beneficial animals are very secretive and spend a lot of time in burrows, under stones and in rotted out logs. I hope you are prepared to go hunting for him because you can't buy his groceries at Morrison's. Their diet consists of snails, slugs, insects, larvae and earthworms. They are listed in Schedule 5 (protected animals) in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. I don't know what the laws are in your area so I don't know if you are legally allowed to keep one. QUESTION: I feel I might have made a mistake?? I have had feeders for many years for finches and hummingbirds and have had many finches that even stay all year. I placed a screech owl box nearby hoping to attract one to kill voles and mice in my garden. I have a screech owl in my box and at first I thought it was great. Now I am worried that I have invited harm to my finches, downy woodpeckers and other songbirds. I guess I am wondering how big the threat to them is???
Janet Burke
New Lenox, Illinois USA - Monday, April 30, 2007
ANSWER: Janet, First of all let me congratulate you for attracting your screech owl. Now for the part that you are worried about. My nesting box is only 25 feet from my feeders maybe even less. She sits sleeping in the hole each day. The birds dont seem to mind. Sometimes the birds raise the dickens with it and she eventually pops back down into the box. They will eat birds. If a bird hasnt gone to bed by dusk they are subject to being eaten. If a bird rises too early and the screech owl is still hungry it could also be eaten. Screech owls feed at night not during the day. So I feel you should be okay the way you have things now. Good luck

QUESTION: I LIVE IN A PENTHOUSE CONDO IN ATLANTA AND MISS MY BIRD FEEDING ACTIVITY. HOW DO I GET BIRDS TO COME THIS HIGH? I DON'T WANT FALCONS OR OTHER LARGE BIRDS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PROMPT RESPONSE! LAURA
ATLANTA, GA USA - Wednesday, April 18, 2007
ANSWER: To be honest with you Laura, I dont know. You may want to make sure that your lease allows you to feed birds first. Then put out a small feeder with some sunflower chips in it. That way you wont have to spend a lot of money to find out if you can attract them. There are some small inexpensive feeders that would work. Make sure it is one that has a tray around it so they can sit on a flat area to feed. Good Luck

QUESTION: I don't live near water just an open field that was developed last year. Two weeks ago my husband spotted two Red Tailed Hawks. HUGE... The Female (we think) had a wing span of about 5 feet - the male, 3 feet. I was concerned for my two Bichon Frise Dogs about 11 pounds each, Will the Hawks bother them in the yard? Also, Today we spotted 5 Turkey Vulchers circling our yard and field. There is a stream across the street but no farms with large animals anywhere close. Is 5 Vulchers a little much for road kill?
Lisa
lexington, ky USA - Tuesday, April 17, 2007
ANSWER: Lisa, Red-tailed hawks would not be able to pick up the Bichons and carry them off, but they could kill them on the ground. Hawks are usually nesting starting in April so you may have a nest nearby. Their nests will look somewhat like squirrels nests except they will be made out of twigs and sticks rather than leaves and twigs. Stay with your pups. The vulchers will show up for ANYTHING. They constantly are looking for dead things. Hopefully, they will move on soon. Good luck

QUESTION: I put out a thistle sock feeder for finches. it is sort of nestled close to a tree. My question's are should the feeder be moved to a more open space? How long should I expect to wait for birds to show up? Thank you, Wendy
Wendy Murry
Long Beach, Wash US - Sunday, April 15, 2007
ANSWER: Wendy, It sounds like your feeder is in a good location. I would make sure that it is in a sunny area so that the seed doesnt get damp. If it gets wet it will get moldy and the birds wont touch it. Go to www.wbu.com and click on Retail Stores then go to the state of Washington. I am not sure what the Goldfinch situation is in that state. Good luck

.Hummingbirds do appear in Wisc. So a hummer feeder would be good. So would a bluebird nesting box or regular seed feeder. If you are looking for a squirrel proof feeder look at the Wild Bill. It runs on two 9 volt batteries and gives the critters a little static shock. Its just enough to keep them from the feeder. Good luck Shirley

.Thanks for the warm fuzzies about my site. Hawks will use railings sometimes just to rest. They will also use them to survey the area for food. QUESTION: Do humming birds stay in south florida all winter? What would be the best type of humming bird feeder to hang from a screened porch/patio? Thank you.
bette slacker
hallandale beach, florida - Tuesday, December 19, 2006
ANSWER: We have a different group of hummers that arrive around the time that the Eastern Ruby-throated hummer leaves for South America and Mexico. They come from Washington and Oregon states. There are 12 different species that have been seen and recorded in the southeastern states. The Rufous, and Black-chinned are the most seen here in Georgia. Use feeders that have a perching area. The round saucer type is a good one because it wont leak. Usually the top pops off for easy cleaning. Be sure to use an ant trap above it. The ants wont cross the water in it so they cant climb down the hanger. Also remember that the mixture is 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. Dont vary it and dont use red food coloring. It can affect the babies. Good luck, Shirley

QUESTION: I have had a goldfinch feeder out for 6 weeks with fresh thistle in it. It is hanging by itself close to the house about 5 feet off of the ground. I have had no goldfinches visit, but they are in the neighborhood. What am I doing wrong?
Cindy Fay
Mt. Prospect, IL USA - Thursday, September 14, 2006 at 18:18:49
ANSWER: How long have you had the feeder up? Sometimes it takes awhile for them to find it. Hang it near your regular seed feeders for awhile. Once they start coming then you can move it to a different area. Usually, its because the seed has gone bad. If Niger gets wet it can mold. When this happens the birds wont touch it. Good Luck

QUESTION: I have plenty of hummingbirds and finches in my yard which I enjoy immensely but please I want to know how to attract a bluebird. I'm talking about bluebirds not a bluejay. Frankly I find bluejays right annoying. So, I can use all the information you can give me on how to attract that beautiful bluebird I would greatly appreciate it. Sincerely, Brenda
Brenda Hiter
Springfield, KY - Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at 16:30:05
ANSWER: Brenda...The nesting box is the best way to attract them. Put it on a pole and place it around your yard so that nothing is hanging down around it. Not under a canopy of trees. Very open area. I have seen them very near and even facing the house. Not near your feeders or in a foot traffic area. See the article on Bluebirds. Any birdseed that includes peanuts. They LOVE peanuts. They will start coming to your feeders and bringing their babies too. Mealworms in proper feeders if you want to give them a treat. They will feed their babies while they are still on the nest with the mealworms. Good Luck...

Clip one of the brances down low to see if it is green. I am sure that some of the branches are going to be dead so try several. I have to cut out the dead branches every spring after they green up. BENTON, KENTUCKY USA - Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 10:28:05
ANSWER: Hawks are nesting now so it will be very hard to keep them away from your feeders. Try not feeding for awhile. Your birds will come back. Don't give the hawks a straight flight path to your feeders. Hide them well. Hummers will feed just about anywhere. My feeder is next to my niger feeder and they don't seem to mind. Just make sure you have it somewhere that you can view them easily.

How can I keep squirrels away from my humming bird feeder I fill the container and they climb on it and spill the juice
charles low
greenville, ms - Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at 11:13:44
Once squirrels get the taste of the nectar it is hard to keep them away. If they are getting onto your feeder from the top, place a baffle at least 18 to 20 inches in diameter above it. If they are jumping sideways to get to it get the feeder out farther. They are little devils.

Peggy, cardinals LOVE black oil sunflower seed. Whole, hulled, and/or chipped. Use a feeder that has a flat platform or tray. A hopper type feeder would be great. They also like cracked corn, and nutmeats of all kinds. Consider planting pyracantha, mulberry, hackberry, flowering dogwood, hawthorn, and privet to name just a few.

Try using safflower seed only. You will still have the cardinals, chickadees, and others. Most "trash" birds don't like it. Butterfly bushes usually don't need anything but sun. Check for bugs. Maybe your local nursery can help you.

Wendy...Hummers are just now coming to Georgia from the mountains. They are beginning to fatten up for their flight south later this fall. You should have some hummers there now. Try more flowers around your feeder area like red sage, bee balm, cardinal flower and fuchias. Even tying a big red bow near your feeder will help. Be sure to keep the nectar a 4 to 1 ratio. 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. Boil it, cool down, fill feeder and keep the rest in the fridge. Change it every three days in hot weather. Answer to Laura... What kind of plants do you have in your yard? Some of the plants that are important to hummers are Bee Balm, Red Salvia, Trumpet Vine, Trumpet Honeysuckle, Carpet Bugle, Weigela, Cardinal Flower, and many more. Fill some pots with flowers near your feeders. Only fill your feeders half full until they start feeding enough to keep the nectar growing bacteria. Hope this helps.

I am always inspired by wonderful, informative sites. I have two bluebirds that have had their young (2 sets of young each spring/summer) in my backyard. I bought some mealeworms for themlast weekend and yesterday they found them. First thing in the morning I watch them feed their young with the worms (I have a difficult time going to work). A rabbit made a home under my pussy willow tree and had 2 little ones. One little one comes right to the back door. My hummingbirds are here, what a joy they are.
